Letting Go Isn’t Always Easy to Do
By Rev. John W. Adams
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to attract all manner of good to you without a lot of extra effort. It would be equally wonderful to take care of human relationship problems harmoniously minus the usual hurt feelings and mis-understandings.
Of course, it would be much better to keep your relationships running smoothly most of the time. The way of doing that is by practicing nonresistance, or to let go and let God do it.
It seems that most people tend to pray too hard, try too hard, and work too hard, and we might add to that, worry too hard! I once saw a sign that read: “Why worry, it probably won’t happen.”
You may have seen one of the bumper stickers that declares: “Easy does it!” That is a good thing to remember, especially when you begin to get stressed out over something that probably doesn’t deserve that much attention anyway.
It is not always easy to let go and let God do it, or, to let Him take care of a seemingly difficult situation, but as you persist in faith, allowing God to work through you, things get easier. The way clears as you practice nonresistance in which you no longer resist letting go, or to insist on your own way. God’s way is always easier than your way!
God Is Working on It!
Letting go and letting God do it does not give you license to become lazy, indifferent, or to just sit and wait for God to do something for you. While waiting upon God is often the best, or sometimes the only thing you can do, the inner quality of how you wait is important and quite possibly the key to desired results.
When you wait impatiently, fuming and fussing, you are resisting. When you wait patiently (lovingly) in the assurance that God (Love) is at work, you are nonresistant. A favorite positive prayer of mine is:
Relax. Have Faith. Be Patient.
God is working on it!
Worrying is not nonresistance. Being angry isn’t either. Neither is allowing yourself to be a door mat or a weak kind of person. Nonresistance is strength. It is power. Nonresistance is Love.
It is allowing Love to be in you as patience, kindness, peacefulness, and the knowing of what is right for you to say and do, and following through with appropriate action. Mostly, nonresistance is not insisting upon your own way, but letting go and letting God do it through you and for you.
Whatever your need or desire, release it to God. Releasing is letting go and letting God do it. That is taking the nonresistant approach. It is faith at work. Get yourself, and your limiting concepts, worries, fears, angers, resentments out of the way and let God (Love) work in and through you.
Emerson said it well: “Get your bloated nothingness out of the way and let God do His work.” The more you do that, the easier, happier, healthier, and rewarding your life is.
