The Three Terrible C’s: Condemnation, Criticism, Complaining
In some religions, it is a practice to give up something for Lent such as sweets, meat, or some other food. This is a good practice, but it leaves more important things untouched.
During this Lenten season, in preparation for Easter, I suggest that you give up the Three Terrible Cs: Condemnation, Criticism and Complaining.
If you have been in the habit of being quick to condemn, then it will take some discipline to stop doing that for the next 40+ days. The same is true with criticizing and complaining.
Often, the ones who practice these nasty habits are unaware of what they are doing. A good way to find out is to listen-really listen-to what you are saying. But begin with listening to your inner thoughts and “self-talk.”
There was a time when I cared little as to what I said to other people. I mistakenly believed it was okay to condemn other people. Likewise, it is justifiable to criticize others, too, as well as complain. It took some hard lessons, several years and a lot of love to get over those bad habits.
The good news is that it is life-transforming to refrain from the terrible Cs. When I first did this, I was amazed at how freeing it was and how much happier I became. To my amazement, people whom I had found difficult or objectionable actually began to like me because I had changed my attitude.
Beginning now, today, listen–really listen–to what you are thinking and saying. Pay attention to your attitude toward others. Refrain from practicing the terrible Cs from now until Easter regardless of the motivation to do otherwise. You don’t need to snap a rubber band on your wrist unless you enjoy pain. Just use the great power of your mind! Let me hear what happens. – Lovingly, Rev. John

Appreciates Help! – Your letter really helped me. Since then, I have made it a point to take time every morning and have my talk with God and to listen to what He has to say to me. Then I follow through on His guidance. This has made a big difference in my life. I am much happier and healthier, and my prosperity has been growing nicely since I began to tithe. Your taking time to answer my questions showed me that you really care. This in itself means so much to me. Thank you for being there and for all you do for me and so many other people. My grateful tithe is enclosed. – A. N. in Florida
