When a woman, who wondered why she was not happy, came to talk with me. She told me she tried to be happy, prayed for happiness, but it didn’t come, or if it came a little, it left very quickly. This was followed by some angry, pessimistic words. She had nothing good to say about anyone, including herself. Everything was wrong with everything! Little wonder this lady wasn’t happy. Her anger got in the way.
When there was a break in her angry words, I asked, “Who is it you are really angry at, or you are afraid of?” She replied, “Afraid? I’m not afraid of anyone! But I am really mad at my father for treating my mother the way he did.”
I was quiet for a minute and then I asked her, “Are you afraid that you will attract a man like your father so you have developed a protective shield around yourself.” With that she burst into tears.
After composing herself, she said, “You are right, but I don’t know what to do about it.”
I then asked her if she really wanted to be happy. She said she did and I told her she must forgive her father and stop being angry toward him if she really wanted to be happy. I explained that holding grudges and resentment robs everyone of joy. I suggested that she not only forgive him, but to forgive herself for allowing herself to get caught up in all that negative energy.
When she asked how she could do that, I helped her to realize that forgiveness is love in expression and through love she would discover freedom and with that freedom, would come happiness. I told her she didn’t need to go to her father, but to speak words of forgiveness and love and to do the same for herself.
She said she would do her best and asked that I keep with her in prayer which I did. It wasn’t easy for this lady, but gradually the old wounds healed and she even began to like herself and to find good in things and in people. Eventually, she was able to actually love her father. The anger had vanished, the healing was complete and she reveled in her new found happiness.
Some time later, she called to say that she had met a wonderful man and they were planning to be married.
